Meter Reader Opportunity at Manitoba Hydro Utility Services

Manitoba Hydro Utility Services (MHUS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Manitoba Hydro and is contracted by the Utility to provide meter reading services. Although MHUS' main recruitment efforts are undertaken in the spring, the company also has an ongoing need for casual labour to help meet its workload requirements.

Selection Process

Candidates are selected for interviews and then may move on to a meter reading test. The meter reading test is administered at the company's location at 35 Sutherland Avenue.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Graduate;
  • Valid Driver's License (abstract is required);
  • Must possess a vehicle for work;
  • Criminal Record Check (required prior to hire);
  • Physical Examination.

Duties

Meter readers:

  • read both outside and inside electric and natural gas meters;
  • utilize computerized handheld technology to enter reads;
  • work within the City of Winnipeg and in rural districts;
  • walk an average of 5.5 to 6.5 hours per day.

Meter reading may be the career for you if you:

  • are a mature and conscientious individual who pays attention to detail;
  • possess customer service skills and any computer experience;
  • are capable of working in various settings and in all weather conditions;
  • enjoy working outdoors and dealing with the public.

Typical Hours of Work

Employees hired as casual are not provided guaranteed hours and may be called in as needed. However, casual staff usually work fairly steadily, with regular hours between the months of April and November. MHUS also provides mileage reimbursement for employees as they are required to use their own vehicles.
