Service Person Training Program

As a Service Person Trainee you will participate in a four-year apprenticeship program that includes on-the-job training and twelve weeks of competency based classroom training. As part of your training, you will also be required to obtain a Utility Gas Fitter License by completing the Manitoba Department of Labour Utility Gas Fitter license exam. Service Persons need to continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge to keep pace with the ongoing development of new technology in the natural gas industry.

Service Persons monitor and maintain natural gas distribution systems, respond to natural gas related emergencies and service and inspect natural gas appliances. They:

  • Conduct odorant tests, cathodic reads and regulator station inspections.
  • Repair and make alterations to the natural gas distribution system including above and below grade piping and equipment. Replace natural gas meters and regulators and repair or install service lines.
  • Locate company underground natural gas and electrical lines.
  • Respond to natural gas related emergencies such as damaged gas lines, gas odor calls, fire calls and carbon monoxide calls.
  • Inspect and repair natural gas appliances.

Educational Qualifications:

High school graduate with the following subjects:

  • Mathematics 40S (Applied or Pre-Calculus);
  • Physics 30S;
  • English 40.

*Equivalent academic qualifications may require validation by the Department of Education or Manitoba Labour & Immigration.
