How Do I Apply?

Manitoba Hydro accepts proposals on a wide variety of topics related to our operations.
Proposals are reviewed by the Research Management Board made up of Manitoba Hydro staff. They evaluate R&D proposals and activities and serve as advocates for research within Manitoba Hydro.

Projects can be technical or may involve social and environmental issues. Some examples are:

  • Investigations into alternative fuels like wind, biomass and solar;
  • Research into improvements in power system simulation techniques and modeling;
  • Developing a better understanding of the environment we operate in by looking at fish habitat or animal migration;
  • Improving the energy efficiency of processes or products.

Projects funded include:

  • University projects - masters, doctorate and post-doctorate. These projects fall under Postgraduate Research Funding;
  • Projects with businesses or other research organizations. These projects fall under General Research Funding;
  • Projects internal to Manitoba Hydro.

Where do I start?

Determine if your proposal falls under General Research Funding or Postgraduate Research Funding.

Contact the R&D department to discuss your proposal.

  • If you do not already have a Manitoba Hydro staff member identified as a project monitor/sponsor, the R&D staff will suggest one for you to contact.
  • With this individual's guidance and support, (see Role of the Manitoba Hydro Project Monitor) you will submit a proposal which will be reviewed by the Research Management Board.

Your proposal should strike a balance between technical content, administrative and/or financial information, benefits, justification, and the suitability of the proposed project within Manitoba Hydro's overall objectives. See sample proposal format.

Approval is based on the degree of risk and potential benefit to the Corporation, its employees and/or customers. These benefits may either be direct financial return, such as lower cost in an operating or maintenance function, or an indirect benefit, such as improved employee safety or customer service.

Role of the Project Monitor

All proposals must be championed by a Manitoba Hydro employee whose area of expertise will utilize, or be affected by the research. Project Monitor responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in your proposal development and presentation;
  • Ensuring communication to and support by staff in all internal departments that may have interest in and/or benefit from the potential outcome of the proposed project;
  • Monitoring progress of your research;
  • Ensuring that your project is in keeping with your proposal and that all project deliverables are fully and timely received by Manitoba Hydro;
  • Acting as your main point of contact with Manitoba Hydro and as the Manitoba Hydro liaison for you with respect to Manitoba Hydro's needs; and
  • Ensuring timely dissemination of all project deliverables to all internal departments that may have interest in and/or benefit from the potential outcome of the project.
