Postgraduate research is any project which involves supporting a student. Any research conducted with businesses or other research organizations is instead considered general research.
Proposals for University Postgraduate (P.G.) Research Grants require a student, Professor, and Manitoba Hydro Project Monitor, each with the following roles:
All proposals must be approved by the University Research Administration Office.
The cover page of the proposal must show the names of the student and the Manitoba Hydro Project Monitor.
The proposal (from the professor/student) and the grant application form (from the Manitoba Hydro project monitor) must be received by the R&D Department on the first working day of the month of your presentation. If the proposal is not on time, you will be given the next available time slot, and that may not necessarily be the following month. No exceptions!
Full approval of a proposal may be obtained by:
If approved under (b), the Research Management Board must meet the student shortly after arrival.
Support of a proposal in principle is subject to the selection and presentation of:
Following are the steps involved in the University Grants approval process:
The Research Management Board discusses and votes on each proposal. Your Project Monitor will be informed of the Research Management Board's decision within two working days of your presentation.
It is important that you book your presentation time through your Project Monitor at least two months prior to presenting your proposal.
Funding comes under two main areas — the first is student stipend, and the second is the expenses directly related to the project.
MSc Stipend is $17,300 per year ($1441.67/month) for a maximum of 18 months. Progress presentations may be required in some cases, at the discretion of the Line Advocate.
PhD Stipend is $21,000 per year ($1,750/month) for a maximum of 24 months. Approval for second year funding may in some cases be contingent upon the student presenting a satisfactory progress report to the Research Management Board, including results to date, costs thus far in comparison to budgeted amount, schedule and cost of further work.
Student stipend is for the student, approved by Manitoba Hydro and transferable only on approval by Manitoba Hydro.
If the student completes the project early, or if funds remain at the completion of the project, these funds shall be returned to Manitoba Hydro's R&D Department.
Operating expenses shall not exceed $500 unless specifically itemized and costed.
Expense approval will be at the discretion of Manitoba Hydro's Research Management Board and the R&D Planning Officer.
Expenses for conference travel will not normally be funded, but will be considered under special circumstances, requiring prior approval.
Manitoba Hydro will not provide funding for computer hardware/equipment requests. If a computer is required, proponents must demonstrate the availability of that computer.
Under special circumstances, Manitoba Hydro will consider the leasing or purchase of equipment considered crucial to the success of the project.
Purchased equipment becomes the property of Manitoba Hydro upon completion of the project.
All correspondence and reports should have the Manitoba Hydro project number clearly identified. The Research Management Board requests that an annotated bibliography be included in the final report.
You must submit one copy of the Final Report or Thesis to the R&D Department. The copy of the final report must at least include detailed description of the project, including, without limitation, all methodology, designs, specifications, drawings, data, and results, that may be used or conceived (collectively "Project Information"). Unless otherwise expressly stipulated under a mutually executed written legal contractual document with Manitoba Hydro, Manitoba Hydro will have irrevocable, perpetual, unrestricted, royalty-free, worldwide, and sublicensable, rights to copy, reproduce, modify, and use, any and all Project Information at any time for any purpose.
