Project Examples
Recent Research & Development projects funded by Manitoba Hydro:
- Solar Energy Greenhouse
Started in 2004 and still on-going, this project involves creating a longer growing season for vegetables by maximizing the winter sunshine. Along with Manitoba Hydro, Agri-Food Research and Development Initiative also funded this project.
- Beluga Whales in the Nelson River Estuary
Started in 2003 and completed in 2006, the goal of this project was to tag and track beluga whales in the Nelson River estuary to help understand their habitat use. This is part of the overall Arctic Net project. Apart from Manitoba Hydro, funding was through the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), as well as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
- Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
Beginning In 2005 and with research still on-going, a 2005 Toyota Prius Electric Vehicle (HEV) was purchased and converted to a PHEV-50 (with 50 mile net operating range as an electric vehicle). The potential of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Manitoba is being explored, as well as the possible impact that the new technology could have on future Manitoba Hydro electrical load growth and energy markets.
- Protection of Lake Sturgeon and their Habitat
Manitoba Hydro is helping to ensure the recovery of sturgeon populations across the province by funding current and on-going research.
