Generating electricity as a back-up for your own use.
Example: Having a home or office building with a stand-by generator which will only be used if your Hydro power goes out or is turned off.
Connecting all or part of your load continuously in parallel with Manitoba Hydro and selling excess power that you have produced. These systems are known as “parallel generation” because they generate power on the customer side of the meter and are interconnected to Manitoba Hydro’s electric grid. Power from both sources are working simultaneously.
Example: Producing some of your own power to keep your energy bills lower but still using Manitoba Hydro’s energy on a continual basis for the remainder of your energy needs.
A company other than a utility that generates electricity for the sole purpose of distribution to another party.
Example: Having a stand alone system and exporting the energy you have produced to sell to Manitoba Hydro.
Note of caution: Manitoba Hydro’s experience shows that smaller power projects can be costly to set up and operate. Customers are encouraged to evaluate the amount of energy you expect to produce and the economics of the project to determine your overall cost of electricity.
