Fraudulent Phone Solicitations

Periodically, we receive calls from concerned customers regarding phone calls from companies selling "power saving devices" that supposedly can save them a substantial amount on their electricity bills.

There have been reports that the callers are pretending to be Manitoba Hydro employees, and are telling customers that these devices are approved by Hydro. In some cases they are also asking for credit card numbers.

We have not approved of such a device. We advise all customers to exercise caution and due diligence if they are contacted by anyone selling energy saving devices.

Note that any device being sold and used in Manitoba must be approved by a certification organization accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
See a list of acceptable certification organizations.

Also, note that we do not ask for credit card information over the phone.

If any customers receive phone calls of this type, they should report them immediately to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
