Greenhouse Gas Reports
We are a national leader in managing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While our
GHG emissions are small compared to those of other Canadian utilities and the total emissions of the province, our GHG emissions reduction actions are aggressive.
Since 1991, the net cumulative implication of our operations has been the displaced production of approximately 160 million tonnes of CO2e of GHGs globally.
Voluntary GHG commitments
We have maintained two types of voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitments:
- Under the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), we were committed to progressively step up our carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions to 6 per cent of our baseline
CO2 emissions (defined as the average
CO2 emissions over the 1998–2001 period) by 2010. Manitoba Hydro maintained full compliance with these legally-binding emission reduction targets; our emissions were below the target in all years. 2010 was the final year of the
CCX program.
- Manitoba Hydro also maintains another voluntary commitment within the Corporate Strategic Plan which aims to keep gross annual
GHG emissions to 6 per cent below our 1990 baseline. The target under this commitment is to produce less than 520 kilotonnes of CO2e on an annual basis.
