Source and Type of GHG

In January 2010, The Climate Change and Emissions Reductions Act. came into effect. This provincial Act limits the use of coal fired electrical generation to minimal levels, except to support emergency operations, including drought. This, combined with favourable water conditions, contributed to total gross GHG emissions in 2010 of 132 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), or 75 per cent below the target.

Source of GHG

Most of our emissions are produced when coal and natural gas are burned to generate electricity. In 2010, this accounted for 51.2 per cent of our total, followed by:

  • 18 per cent emissions from fleet vehicles;
  • 17.4 per cent natural gas operations;
  • 13.4 per cent other.

Type of GHG

On a CO2e basis, carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas emission from our operations. In 2010, this accounted for 80 per cent of our total, followed by:

  • 17 per cent methane;
  • 2 per cent sulphur hexafluoride;
  • 1 per cent nitrous oxide.
