The Bipole III Transmission Project requires a ground electrode at both the northern and southern converter stations. A ground electrode, a buried metal ring located within a section of land, is not visible at ground level and is generally undetectable in its function.
A preferred ground electrode site has been selected for the operation of the southern Riel Converter Station in the Rural Municipality of Springfield, northwest of Anola.
Landowner information centres and a public open house were held in Dugald in March 2011, to review the preferred location of the ground electrode. The following material was presented:
In addition, an electrode line is required to connect the ground electrode site to the Riel Converter Station. At the time of the public events, a study area was presented but the location of the line had not been selected. The electrode line is an overhead low voltage line with structures similar to those on distribution power lines common along roadsides in rural Manitoba. It is anticipated that this line can be routed on existing road or other rights-of-way. Adjacent land owners and the RM of Springfield will be notified of its proposed location prior to route finalization.
