Security Lighting

Research shows that nine out of 10 thieves won't set foot into a yard that's well lit. A well-designed security lighting system is an investment. It reduces the expense caused by vandalism and loss of property, and gives you peace of mind.

  • Place lamps on the walls or roofs of adjacent buildings, or on poles at your property's perimeter.
  • In critical locations, use two lamps in case one fails. Check lamps regularly to ensure they are operating and area coverage is maintained.
  • Install lights at all points of entry into your home — the porch, the rear, side, and garage doors, even storage sheds and carports.
  • Choose bright fixtures, such as floodlights. Aim floodlights away from the house to make it easier to see people approaching your home. Place lights out of reach from the ground to avoid bulbs being removed or broken.
  • Install an energy-saver timer to turn lights on and off. Many outdoor lighting systems include a photocell that turns lights on when it's dark, and off at daylight.
  • Add a surveillance component to your lighting system. A motion sensor light can throw a sudden burst of illumination if anyone approaches. It maintains light for the period you choose — anywhere from 10 seconds to 15 minutes — before shutting off automatically. Important: choose a motion sensor light that operates at –40 C.
