Windows

Windows have a considerable impact on thermal insulation and the comfort of the indoor environment. They are critical to maintaining a steady temperature and good lighting. With significant advances in window technology and construction, upgrading windows to Power Smart standards serves to improve the performance of a building by reducing heating and cooling costs and improving the overall comfort.

High performance windows have some or all of these energy efficient features:

  • vinyl, fibreglass or wood frames;
  • triple glazing;
  • insulating spacer bars;
  • low emissivity (low-e) coatings on the glass;
  • argon, rather than air, between the panes.

Financial incentives (PDF, 475 MB) are available for energy efficient windows with a U-value of less than 1.7 on windows of an existing building. Eligible projects receive $150/m2/U.

To find out if your proposed windows meet the program’s requirements, visit the ENERGY STAR® Canada or the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) websites.
