Natural gas unit heaters are used to heat commercial and industrial spaces (warehouses, garages, ice rinks, manufacturing plants, etc.), and for spot heating in commercial buildings near storage and loading areas.
Generally, these units are suspended from the ceiling and do not require ductwork.
Commercial natural gas unit heaters are rated by their thermal efficiency, which describes how efficient a unit heater is when it's firing. A unit heater with a thermal efficiency rating of 80 per cent will use 80 per cent of the natural gas energy to heat the building when the burner is operating; the remaining 20 per cent of the energy will be lost.
Seasonal efficiency indicates how much natural gas energy was used to heat the building over the entire heating season. Presently, there is no requirement to rate commercial unit heaters by their seasonal efficiency.
