Choose the right
CFL for your fixture
Compact fluorescent light bulbs use less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 8 times longer. They are the friendly environmental alternative that helps you save on your energy bill. To make the most of your
CFLs, choose the right kind for your fixture.
When you are buying
CFLs, keep these tips in mind:
- Select ENERGY STAR qualified
CFLs for quality and long life. ENERGY STAR qualified
CFLs come with a minimum 2-year warranty. Keep your receipt and the packaging. If the bulb burns out before the warranty is up, the manufacturer may replace the bulb free of charge.
- Get the full life out of your CFLs and use them in fixtures where the light is on for 30 minutes or longer.
- Motion or light sensors may shorten the life of the bulb. There are special
CFLs for tri-lights, dimmer switches, and recessed fixtures.
- An outdoor fixture should have a cover to protect the
CFL. Many
CFLs work in temperatures as low as –18 C, but lower temperatures may cause
CFLs to appear dim, have trouble turning on or not last as long.
Always read the
CFL package carefully for information on wattage, temperature range, and whether that
CFL is the appropriate choice for your lighting needs.
