Bathroom

Hot water

  • When your electrician installs your electric water heater, have the thermostat set to 54 C (130 F) to provide lots of hot water and save money.

Exhaust fan

  • Turn off exhaust fans after 20 minutes so they don't suck the hot or cool air out of your home.

Low-flow showerheads

Shower time

  • 10 years ago, a 10 minute shower with a standard low-flow showerhead used up to 95 litres of water. Today, a 10 minute shower with a new energy efficient showerhead uses 52 litres of water (45 per cent less). The difference in water savings is enough to wash 170 loads of laundry in a front loading washing machine.

Taps/toilets

  • Install a faucet aerator on your taps.
  • Repair leaking toilets and leaking taps. A leaky faucet can waste up to 11,000 litres (2,900 US gallons) or more every year.
  • Consider installing a dual flush toilet to save water every time you flush.
