Manitoba has an abundance of solar energy. One per cent of this energy would be equal to almost 200 times the annual output of all the hydroelectric dams in our province.
Solar power can be harnessed and used in solar water heating systems. These systems use heat from sunlight to pre-heat water that enters your water tank. Your water heater will then need less energy to reach the desired temperature for all your household hot water needs.
Solar water heating systems can operate year round and typically raise water temperatures by 5 to 10 C (40 to 50 F), which means you could see savings of up to $175 a year on your energy bill.
We have partnered with Natural Resources Canada to offer a $1,200 rebate to homeowners who purchase and install a solar water heating system.
