Most thermostats that are not electronic will contain some mercury, which is considered hazardous waste.
Never attempt to remove the mercury from your thermostat; instead, dispose of your old thermostat in a safe way by dropping it off at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at Miller Environmental, 1803 Hekla Avenue, in Winnipeg on the first Saturday of each month.
For residents outside of Winnipeg, store your thermostat in a safe place, and contact your local recycling and/or waste management office to find out when the next Household Hazardous Waste collection event will be held near your community.
