Energy Savings for Manitobans

Power Smart has delivered significant savings to Manitobans:

Here are some examples, since we first started offering energy efficiency programs in 1989:

• The Power Smart program has saved the power equivalent of supplying the communities of The Pas, Steinbach, Souris, Selkirk, Dauphin, Morden, Swan Lake, and Portage la Prairie. That's equivalent to 20 per cent of Winnipeg's power needs.
• Electricity demand and energy savings of 488 MW and 1,360 GWh per year have been achieved.
• 27 million cubic metres of natural gas have been conserved.
• The Power Smart program has saved an estimated 970,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions annually.
• Over 306,000 customers have participated in Power Smart programs, saving nearly $331 million on their electricity and natural gas bills.
• Thanks to Power Smart initiatives, Manitobans build among the most energy efficient homes in the world.

Savings achieved through conservation measures mean that surplus energy can be exported outside the province. Sales of exported power reduce the price of power charged to Manitobans by as much as 30 per cent, and help to keep our electricity rates among the lowest in North America.
