Changes to the Manitoba Electrical Code
A new edition of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) was introduced on January 1, 2021. The Manitoba Electrical Code (MEC) is based on the CEC, so prior to adoption we have reviewed any major CEC changes with the Manitoba Electrical Advisory Committee, our advisory group representing the Manitoba electrical industry. We have reviewed the 2021 CEC and recommend the adoption and enforcement of the CEC and changes to the MEC effective October 1, 2021.
We would like your feedback on the 2021 Manitoba code changes.
You may also provide feedback directly to the Canadian Standards Association.
We are a member of the CSA group of technical committees that helps to maintain a portfolio of electrical code rules that make up the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).The new edition of the CEC: Part I-Safety Standard for Electrical Installations 2021 (C22.1-18, 25th Edition) was published by CSA and The Standards Council of Canada on January 1, 2021. The 2021 edition contains amendments to the 2018 version. The current Manitoba Electrical Code is based on the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I – Safety Standard for Electrical Installations 2018 (C22.1-18, 24th Edition) with Manitoba-specific amendments. Section 28(1) and (2) of the Manitoba Hydro Act grants Manitoba Hydro with the authority, by regulation, to adopt each new edition of the Canadian Electrical Code and any relevant local amendments as The Manitoba Electrical Code. Prior to adoption Manitoba Hydro regularly consults with electrical industry stakeholders within Manitoba to ensure that any local technical concerns are considered.
