Awards and bursaries for Indigenous peoples

We support Indigenous students who are interested in a career with us. You must identify as a member of a designated diversity group and provide proof of Indigenous ancestry.

High school awards


Apply for a high school award

High school applications are only accepted between June 1 and July 15.


Northern Student award

We offer $300 awards to 3 Indigenous students. You must:

  • be in grade 9–12, and living north of the 53rd parallel.

Academic performance, personal achievements, and other accomplishments are considered.


Physics award

We offer a $200 award to 1 Indigenous student. You must be:

  • from Fox Lake, Nelson House, Split Lake, War Lake, or York Factory communities;
  • enrolled in Physics 30S or 40S.

Academic performance, community involvement, and career interests are considered.


Trio award

We offer 3 awards to 3 Indigenous students. You must have:

  • academic performance or demonstrated improvement (by grade) in the completion of Mathematics (Applied or Pre-calculus), English, and required level of Science:
    • $200 award for Grade 10 (20S Math, English, and 20F Science);
    • $300 award for Grade 11 (30S Math, English, and Physics);
    • $500 award for Grade 12 (40S Math, English, and Physics).

Post-secondary awards and bursaries


Basic Electrical award

We offer $500 awards to 2 Indigenous students. You must be:

  • enrolled in the Basic Electrical program at University College of the North in The Pas.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


First year Business bursary

We offer $1,500 bursaries to 3 Indigenous students. You must be enrolled in:

  • your first year of studies in a 4-year Business degree program (majoring in accounting, finance, human resources, Indigenous business studies, or marketing) at University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, or Brandon University;
    OR
  • the first year of the 4-year bachelor of Business Administration degree program at the University College of the North.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


Second year to final year business bursary

We offer $2,500 bursaries to 2 Indigenous students. You must be enrolled in:

  • your second year to final year of studies in a 4-year Business degree program (majoring in accounting, finance, human resources, Indigenous business studies, or marketing) at University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, or Brandon University;
    OR
  • your second to final year of the 4-year bachelor of Business Administration degree program (majoring in accounting or general studies) at the University College of the North.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


Certificate program award

We offer a $500 bursary to 1 Indigenous student. You must be enrolled in:

  • a recognized educational institute for an eligible 1-year certificate program such as:
    • Administrative Assistant;
    • Business & Administrative Studies;
    • Computer Applications;
    • Contact Centre Representative;
    • Electrical;
    • Human Resources Assistant or Network Support.
    OR
  • the University College of the North Business Administration (Basic Business Principles or Office Assistant), or Heavy Duty Mechanics certificate programs.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


First year Engineering bursary

We offer $1,500 bursaries to 3 Indigenous students. You must be enrolled in your first year of studies at:

  • the University of Manitoba in engineering (biosystems, computer, civil, electrical, or mechanical), or a member of the Engineering Access Program (ENGAP);
    OR
  • the Transfer Pathway Engineering program at the University College of the North.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


Second year to final year Engineering bursary

We offer $2,500 bursaries to 3 Indigenous students. You must be:

  • enrolled in their second year to final year of studies at the University of Manitoba in engineering (biosystems, computer, civil, electrical, or mechanical) and/or a member of the Engineering Access Program (ENGAP).

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


Introduction to Construction Trades award

We offer a $500 award to 1 Indigenous student. You must be:

  • enrolled in the Introduction to Construction Trades program at University College of the North in Thompson.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from November 1 to December 1.


Natural Resource Management Technology bursary

We offer a $1000 bursary to 1 Indigenous student. You must be:

  • in your second year of a 2-year Natural Resource Management Technology diploma program at University College of the North.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

The application period is from September 1 - October 15.


Pathway to Engineering Technology awards

We offer $500 awards to 2 Indigenous students. You must be:

Introduction to Trades award

We offer $500 awards to 6 Indigenous students. You must be:

  • enrolled in the Introduction to Trades program at Red River Polytech;
  • 3 awards are for the February class;
  • 3 awards are for the September class.

Academic performance, home community, financial need, and community involvement are considered in the selection process.

Application deadlines: March 1 (February class), October 1 (September class).


Manitoba Indigenous Youth Achievement Awards

We offer $1,000 awards to 2 Indigenous students (a senior and a junior). You must be:

  • between the ages of 16 and 24;
  • a senior who has achieved academic excellence in post-secondary education or training institutions;
  • A junior who has achieved academic excellence in post-secondary education or training institutions.

Manitoba Indigenous Youth Achievement Awards (MIYAA) accepts nominations and selects students to receive awards. For more information and nomination forms (posted each September), visit the MIYAA website.
