Manitoba Hydro 2025 pesticide program

Public notice is hereby given under Manitoba Regulation 94/88R that Manitoba Hydro intends to conduct the following programs between the dates May 12, 2025 to May 1, 2026:

  1. Herbicide Vegetation Management to discourage incompatible plant species from growing near Manitoba Hydro infrastructure to ensure reliability, electric supply, environmental compliance, and public safety in the following locations:
    1. Ground Vegetation Management for trees, shrubs, and tall growing vegetation on distribution powerline and pipeline corridors located in City of Steinbach, City of Thompson, Cormorant-Northern Affairs Act, Dallas/Red Rose-Northern Affairs Act, Hamiota Municipality, Lgd of Mystery Lake, Municipality of Harrison Park, Municipality of Lorne, Municipality of Norfolk Treherne, Prairie View Municipality, RM of Argyle, RM of Brokenhead, RM of Coldwell, RM of Dufferin, RM of Fisher, RM of Grey, RM of Hanover, RM of La Broquerie, RM of Oakview, RM of Portage La Prairie, RM of Reynolds, RM of Riding Mountain West, RM of Springfield, RM of St. Clements, RM of St. Laurent, RM of Ste. Anne, RM of Victoria, RM of Wallace-Woodworth, RM of Whitemouth, Rossburn Municipality, South Indian Lake-Northern Affairs Act, Town of Leaf Rapids, Town of The Pas and Yellowhead Municipality.
    2. Ground Vegetation Management for trees, shrubs, invasive species, and tall growing vegetation on transmission lines corridors located in Meadow Portage Northern Affairs Act, Spence Lake Northern Affairs Act, Waterhen Northern Affairs Act, RM of Alexander, RM of Alonsa, City of Brandon, RM of Cornwallis, Dauphin RM, RM of Elton, RM of Grahamdale, RM of Langford, RM of Lansdowne, RM of Mossey River, RM of Mountain North, Crown Land, RM of Ochre River, RM of Odanah, RM of Park South, RM of Reynolds, RM of Shoal Lake, RM of Ste Rose, RM of Strathclaire, RM of Waterhen, RM of Westbourne, and RM of Whitemouth.
    3. Ground, Vegetation Management for all vegetation specific to generating stations including switchyards, dykes, rail, district yards, building perimeters, fuel tank storage areas, laydown areas, support infrastructure, storage yards, airports, control structures.
    4. Ground, Individual Stems Treatments where, and as, required using basal bark and cut stump treatments.
    5. Aerial Application by Drone or Rotary Winged Aircraft for incompatible vegetation species on transmission corridors in: RM Glenella-Landsdowne; RM of Westlake-Gladstone; RM of Cartwright/Roblin; Prairieview Municipality; RM of North Cypress-Langford.
    Proposed Adjuvants and Active ingredients: Alkoxylated alcohol, triclopyr; picloram; 2,4-D; imazapyr, aminopyralid, aminocyclopyrachlor, mecoprop, methsulfuron-methyl, Fluroxypyr, and metsulfuron-methyl, glyphosate, chlorsulfuron, picloram, dicamba, flumioxazin, paraffinic oil, triclopyr, diflufenzopyr, propyzamide, pyroxasulfone; indaziflam; chlosulfuron and saflufenacil.
  2. Pole Maintenance on in-service wood poles: the application of supplemental wood preservation to reinforce protection against decay and insecticide, in order to control damage caused by carpenter ants on wooden poles for distribution, sub-transmission and transmission lines throughout the Province. Poles will be treated as required. Other individual poles may be treated as needed.

    The proposed active ingredients are borax, disodium-octaborate tetrahydrate, copper, metam, copper napthenate, borate, boric acid, meta sodium, sodium fluoride, and permethrin.
  3. Pesticide Insect, Rodent and Pigeon Control Corporate Facilities owned and/or operated by Manitoba Hydro throughout the Province. In all electrical sub-stations; gas sites; yard sites; Manitoba Hydro district offices; and telecommunication sites. In the facilities of the following generating stations: Brandon; Selkirk; Great Falls; Slave Falls; Seven Sisters; Pine Falls; Pointe du Bois; MacArthur Falls; Grand Rapids, Keeyask; Kettle; Kelsey Long Spruce; Limestone; Laurie River; Missi Falls; Jenpeg and converter stations: Dorsey; Riel; Radisson, Henday and Keewatinohk.

    The proposed active ingredients are: brodifacoum; bromadiolone; avitrol; permethrin; diphacinone; dichlorvos; malathion; boric acid and pyrethrin.
  4. Herbicide Control in all electrical sub-stations; gas sites; yard sites; Manitoba Hydro district offices; Manitoba Hydro telecommunication sites for worker safety. In Converter Stations (Dorsey; Riel; Radisson; Henday; Keewatinohk). In Generating stations (Brandon; Selkirk; Point Du Bois; Slave Falls; Seven Sisters; MacArthur; Great Falls; Pine Falls; Grand Rapids; Jenpeg; Wuskwatim; Manasan; Notigi; Laurie River; Missi Falls; Kelsey; Keeyask; Kettle; Limestone Long Spruce; Gillam) and transmission corridors in municipalities of Rosser; Winnipeg plus customer owned stations at 386 Industrial Park Road in St. Agathe to comply with the Manitoba Noxious Weed Act, as and where required.

    The proposed active ingredients include: glyphosate, chlorsulfuron, picloram, 2,4-D; dicamba, imazapyr, aminopyralid, aminocyclopyrachlor, flumioxazin; metsulfuron methyl, paraffinic oil, triclopyr, diflufenzopyr, Fluroxypyr, propyzamide, pyroxasulfone; indaziflam; chlosulfuron and saflufenacil.
  5. Landscape Care on Manitoba Hydro owned landscaped grounds throughout the province, around buildings and facilities, for noxious weeds and insects as required. The proposed products are allowable pesticide products in Manitoba under MR286/2014.
