Fuel-burning appliances
During a power outage, it may be tempting to use fuel-burning equipment. Never operate fuel-burning patio heaters, barbecues, camp stoves or generators inside your home or in an enclosed space. Dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) can accumulate, causing illness or death.

During a flood
Spring run-off flooding may develop slowly, but heavy rain can cause flash floods in lowland areas and basements. We disconnect electrical services in flooded areas. If an electrical or natural gas emergency occurs, flood-related or otherwise, call 911 or your local emergency services immediately.
Never enter flooded basements or buildings as they may have energized wires or appliances. Electricity can move through water or wet flooring and cause a severe electrical shock or death. Even a small amount of water on the floor can be dangerous.
- Watch for submerged poles and low-hanging power lines if traveling by boat.
- Avoid standing water as underground or downed power lines can carry an electric charge.
- Don't travel after dark unless it is an emergency as power lines as very difficult to see.
