Don’t let electrical hazards haunt your Halloween

Manitoba Hydro offers electrical safety tips to help prevent fires and keep Halloween fun

As Manitobans prepare for Halloween, Manitoba Hydro is reminding customers to keep electrical safety in mind when decorating homes and yards for the season.

From glowing pumpkins to spooky outdoor displays, Halloween decorations often rely on extension cords, lights and power bars. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of electrical fires and injuries.

“Decorating for Halloween should be fun, but it’s important to use electrical equipment safely,” said Tara Kendzierski, Community Investment and Public Safety Specialist. “Before plugging in lights and decorations, take a few minutes to inspect cords and make sure you’re using the right equipment for the job.”

Manitoba Hydro encourages customers to follow these Halloween electrical safety tips:

  • Avoid overloading outlets with too many plugs or devices. Overloaded circuits can create a fire hazard.
  • Inspect cords before using and replace any that are frayed, cracked or damaged.
  • Keep cords uncovered. Do not run extension under rugs, mats or other objects where they can overheat or become damaged.
  • Use the right extension cord for the location. Indoor extension cords should only be used indoors. Outdoor decorating requires extension cords designed and rated for outdoor use.

A few extra minutes spent setting up decorations safely can help ensure a fun and safe Halloween for family, friends and trick-or-treaters alike.
