Manitoba Hydro continues to restore customers after storm

Approximately 17,000 customers restored today, work continuing on remaining outages

Manitoba Hydro is continuing to make significant progress in restoring service to customers impacted by the severe storm that hit southern Manitoba the evening of June 9.

So far, the utility has restored about 17,000 customers in Winnipeg, Selkirk, south central Manitoba and the Westman and Parkland regions of the province. It is anticipated the vast majority of customers in Westman and Parkland will be back on tonight, as well as a significant portion of customers in Selkirk, though some customers outside Selkirk will remain out overnight.

Crews are also making steady progress in Winnipeg, working to restore power to the largest blocks of customers impacted first. The utility is hoping to restore another 8,000–10,000 customers in Winnipeg by the end of tonight. Unfortunately, another 2,000–3,000 customers will remain out overnight due to the severity of damage to local distribution lines and the need to clear trees to allow crews access.

“We are anticipating having virtually all customers across the province back on by end of day tomorrow, June 11, barring any unforeseen issues,” said Scott Powell, Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing for Manitoba Hydro.

“However, the situation is fluid and there’s a possibility of more severe weather, which could affect our estimates. We know it’s difficult for customers without electricity, and please know we appreciate your patience as we work safely to restore your power as quickly as possible.”

Powell added that there may be instances where Manitoba Hydro may have to shut power off in certain areas of the province to make permanent repairs safely.

“The safety of our employees and customers cannot be compromised,” Powell said.

To that end, Manitoba Hydro is reminding customers to stay at least 10 metres away from any downed power lines and call 911. In addition, customers using generators should ensure they are not used in enclosed spaces and follow all of the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe use of their specific model.

Finally, it is asking customers who may have experienced tree damage to their overhead service mast to contact a licensed electrician right away to arrange for repairs.

“This will help us get your power back on more quickly as we won’t have to wait for those customer repairs to be performed before energizing those properties,” Powell said.
