Westwood customers can resume normal electrical use Monday

End of heatwave will reduce load while work continues on local substation

Customers in the Westwood area can resume their normal electricity use Monday morning, June 1, 2026 as of 6:00 am.

Manitoba Hydro asked customers in this area to reduce their electricity use during peak times over the weekend and early this week as the utility makes important capacity and reliability upgrades at the Cavalier substation. About 1,400 customers were affected.

Lower temperatures are forecast for this week, which will reduce demand on the system while this important work proceeds.

“With relief in sight from this heatwave, we can let customers in Westwood know it’s okay to resume normal use of electricity,” said Scott Powell, Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing for Manitoba Hydro.

“We did see a reduction in the load on the electrical infrastructure in this area over the last couple of days, thanks in part to the response from our Westwood customers who set thermostats a bit higher and delayed use of large appliances until after 10:00 pm.

“Thank you to our customers for your cooperation; we appreciate the challenge this posed in an unseasonably hot weekend, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” Powell said.

This was a localized issue and did not affect customers outside the area between Westwood Drive and Bedson Street, from Portage Avenue south to the Assiniboine River.
