A “treemendous planting day” at Mulvey School
Our Forest Enhancement Program is rooted in a commitment to invest in both the environment and the communities we call home. By supporting projects that expand tree canopy and green spaces, our program helps to ensure that Manitoba’s forests remain healthy, diverse and widespread for generations to come.
This year, we’re proud to recognize Mulvey School as a Forest Enhancement Program recipient. Located on the edge of Winnipeg’s Wolseley and West Broadway neighbourhoods, the school held a day of tree planting called “a treemendous planting day” during which Mulvey School students and staff worked together to plant 25 trees in their schoolyard.

By involving students in the planting and care of trees, the initiative becomes a hands-on learning experience. Children gain a better understanding of environmental stewardship, climate action and the role trees play in creating healthier ecosystems. They develop a sense of ownership and responsibility, and learn at an early age that caring for the environment is a shared interest.
“There’s a lot of education in this. I want the kids to be owners of the trees. I want them to care for their environment. Kudos to Hydro for really understanding our tree canopy is so important,” said Peter Correia, principal of Mulvey School.
The added tree canopy contributes to greener Wolseley and West Broadway communities, offers shade around the schoolyard, improves air quality and enhances the neighbourhood’s natural beauty.
“This is a fantastic program, with a focus on schools, community parks and shared areas and non-profit organizations. Ultimately, we provide the funding and oversee these projects to ensure it’s a success,” said Craig Sambrooke, Forest Enhancement Program administrator.
Since 1995, the Forest Enhancement Program has funded hundreds of community tree planting projects across the province.
Mulvey School’s project is a clear example of how local efforts to plant trees can make a difference in their community.
