Manitoba Hydro crews repairing damage in River Heights

Manitoba Hydro crews continue to repair severe damage to power lines, poles and other equipment caused by severe weather in the River Heights area Sunday night.

About 1,500 customers remained without power Tuesday morning. Crews are working to safely restore power as quickly as possible but the scale of damage is such that outages will likely continue into Wednesday afternoon. Crews are encountering more damage as fallen trees are removed, and access is challenging in some areas.

In the Westwood area, all storm-related outages were restored Monday evening.

Please do not approach crews as they need room to work safely, and there are still safety hazards in the area. Stay at least 10 metres away from downed power lines and anything they touch. Call 911 if you see a downed power line.

Be safe if using a generator. To prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, never operate a generator in a house, garage or other enclosed building. Never plug a generator into an electrical outlet.

Customers without power should check the overhead service mast on their property for damage, and have it repaired by a licensed electrician. These repairs must be completed before we can restore power to that property.

Manitoba Hydro is coordinating with the City of Winnipeg to provide support to residents affected by the storm in the River Heights area. The City will provide further information.

We know extended outages are difficult, and we thank customers for their patience and support as crews work safely to restore power.
